Ronnie O’Sullivan booked his place in this year’s Round 2 of the World Championship after getting past Craig Steadman 10-3 in Sheffield.
Ronnie didn’t get out of 2nd gear as he set up a showdown with the winner of the all Welsh affair between Mark Williams & Matthew Stevens on Sunday.Steadman claimed that he wasn’t nervous to appear on the main stage against arguably the greatest player to play the sport, but he missed too many easy blacks at crucial times to worry O’Sulliavn and looked out of sorts when composure was really needed at the Crucible.
Steadman got on the board in frame three with a nice 71 break after Ronnie took a 2-0 lead, but headed back in at the interval two frames behind trailing the master 3-1 as O’Sullivan won frame four. With Steadman looking to get off to a decent start after the break he unfortunately did the opposite and lost on the final colours after looking in good shape to take the fifth. The Farworth potter took frame six but then it was all about O’Sullivan as he reeled off three quick frames to go into a 7-2 lead at the end of the session.
After the players resumed this morning it always looked an uphill task for the crucible debutant and it was a case of too many crucial easy balls missed as O’Sullivan took the first 12th & 13th frames with ease to advance in Sheffield.
It seems that his little shoe problem he incurred during the match didn’t hinder the master, and he now looks forward to a probable showdown with former finalist Matthew Stevens with the Welsh potter holding a 7-2 lead over Mark Williams after the first session.
